The history of Londis

It was in 1959 that a group of progressive independent retail grocers came together with a shared vision: to establish a fully operational delivered wholesale company owned collectively by the very retailers it served. That very same year, Londis (a contraction of ‘London District Stores’) was established in Great Britain by Kevin Stanley Adams as a communally owned company, with the idea that each individual retailer owns a share in the parent company.

Cut to 2004, when the parent company was sold to the Irish Musgrave wholesale chain, bringing it under the same ownership as Budgens.

2008 was an exceptionally proud year for the brand, as its number of stores increased by over 200, setting an annual increase record for the company.

Today, the Londis retailer network operates thousands of stores scattered across England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland (where it’s controlled by grocer-owned wholesaler ADM Londis plc).
