The history of Screwfix

Screwfix was founded as the Woodscrew Supply Company back in 1979. Based in Yeovil Somerset, the company’s first catalogue had only one page – and it was solely dedicated to screws. In 1987, the brand had expanded to a four-page brochure (called Handimail) committed to inspiring DIY and trade professionals. But it would be another five years before a catalogue produced in the name of Screwfix would appear – the same year that the company celebrated a turnover of £4 million.

Screwfix launched its first website in February 1999, and later that year it was acquired by Kingfisher plc (which is listed on the London Stock Exchange and also owns B&Q). In March 2000, Screwfix hired its 1000th employee and also introduced next-day deliveries in mainland UK.

The brand opened its 300th store in 2008 and in January 2014, Screwfix finally opened for business in Northern Ireland.

Today, Screwfix continues to impress with its home-improvement products and services, including its website which attracts over 6 million visitors a week.
