The history of Beales
John Elmes Beales opened his Fancy Fair and Oriental House in Bournemouth in 1881. Focused on selling homewares (which encapsulated the growing interest in Chinese- and Japanese design), the Beales business remained in the family throughout the 20th century.
By the late 1960s, Beales had evolved into a few branches scattered about numerous UK towns in the south of England. The more it grew, the wider its product range became (including branded bedding, dresses, handbags, socks, and gifts), eventually landing the company on the London Stock Exchange in 1995.
Facing financial difficulties, Beales unfortunately went into liquidation in 2020. However, it was bought by New Start 2020 Limited who breathed new life into the brand, reincarnating it into physical shops once more, plus an online store operated on the company website.
Today, the brand lives on not only through its homeware-, gift- and clothing store, but also the Beales ethos of fantastic service, world class brands and outstanding value.
