Wilko, all the offers at your fingertips

Going from a single 1930s’ hardware store to a successful omnichannel retailer, Wilko continues to offer high-quality products (in-store and online) designed to help you make the most of your home and garden.

About Wilko

Whether it’s home and garden goods, or just some stationery stuff bought online, the Wilko brand is about making families’ lives easier. This is achieved via their products and brands. And the first Wilko brand ever was paint.

Today, more than 14,000 own-brand products (which has evolved to include, among other things, food and pet goodies) are sold, accounting for more than half of Wilko’s annual sales.

The history of Wilko

James Kemsey Wilkinson and his fiancée Mary Cooper opened the first family store, Old Charney, in 1930 in Leicester. Nine more stores opened in the next nine years, with the company known as Wilkinson Cash Stores. But the business really got a boost during the post-war 1950s with the DIY craze, leading to the company (now known as Wilkinson Hardware Stores) opening the first self-service shop in the UK.

During the 1970s, paint became the first own-brand product sold by the company, followed by dozens more (including garden- and cleaning products in the 1980s).

With the years, more home- and garden goods (and stores) were introduced, yet it was wilkinsonplus.com in 2007 that finally satisfied customers’ hunger for online shopping.

Today, the brand (which became Wilko in 2014 and proudly started selling 100% plastic-free wipes in 2020) remains in the founding family.
