The history of Debenhams
William Clark opened a clothing store in London’s West End in 1778. Specialising in fabrics, dresses, gloves, bonnets and parasols, the company got a nice boost when William Debenham invested in it in 1813. Renamed as Clark & Debenham, the brand opened its first store outside of London in 1818 – and flourished thanks to the fashions of the Victorian era.
In 1851, the company’s name changed again (to Debenham & Freebody) after Clement Freebody invested in it. The firm became Debenhams Ltd in 1905 and a public company in 1928. But although it had grown considerably by the 1980s (at one point it had over 178 stores), the company was struggling due to the oil crisis’ recession. In addition, Debenhams’ share price and revenues were dropping. In 2018, Debenhams faced its biggest loss ever, which included the closing down of up to 50 stores. However, with the onset of COVID-19 across the globe, more and more closures followed and by May 2021, all Debenham stores were closed for good.
That was when online fashion retailer Boohoo bought the Debenhams brand, transformed its retail business model, and launched a new website. Thus, even though Debenhams had to close its store doors, the brand still enjoys an energetic online presence – making it one of the longest continuously operating clothing and goods retailers in the UK.
