Founded in Germany over 80 years ago, Lidl is fast becoming one of the UK's most important food retailers. The company was founded by the Shwarz family in 1930, with the first Lidl store opening in 1973. In the first instance the company directors decided to focus on discount markets, large supermarkets and the cash and carry market. Since then, Lidl has undergone a massive expansion to the rest of Europe, with a presence in 20 countries on the continent.
Lidl launched in the UK in 1994 and they now boast more than 580 stores throughout the country. The stores take on a similar approach to other discount retailers, with a distinct 'no-frills' attitude to the store design and facilities. Products are kept in their original delivery cartons and displayed on the shelves as such until the carton is empty, at which point it is simply replaced by a full one. Along with minimal staffing, this ensures that they are able to offer the lowest possible prices to customers while still manitaining a profit.
Unlike other similar retailers, Lidl stores do offer a small selection of branded products. They import low-priced gourmet products from Europe as well as sourcing local products from the country where the store is located, for example their 'Best of British' and 'A Taste of Scotland' ranges. Another unique aspect of the Lidl brand is that they publish weekly offers newsletters, both in print and online, that detail the best food offers in store that week, as well as a number of special non-food offers that change periodically. With a selection of local and more exotic products alongside the guarantee of low-priced, quality goods, you can't miss out on the best deals in town with Lidl - check out the latest offers leaflet now!
