About H&M
H&M might be synonymous with fashion, but the brand is also committed to going as green as possible. This includes innovating not only its materials and processes, but also the business model. And this perfectly complements H&M’s sustainability goals: to use only recycled and sustainably produced materials by 2030 and to be climate positive throughout the value chain by 2040.
The history of H&M
It was in 1947 that Erling Persson opened his first women’s clothing store in Västerås, Sweden. Named Hennes (which means “hers” in Swedish), the shop was a success and led to a second one opening in Norway in 1964. But thanks to the acquisition of the hunting apparel retailer Mauritz Widforss, Persson was able to add a clothing section dedicated to men – and the company name changed to Hennes & Mauritz.
After being listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange in 1974, the brand opened its first store outside of Scandinavia: London! And once the brand was in the UK, a global expansion was kick-started with more shops opening in Europe. By this time, the company name had been shorted to H&M. And after buying the domain hm.com in 1998, H&M could start conquering the world of online shopping.
In 2008, H&M took another giant leap forward by starting to sell home furnishings (which had initially been distributed through an online catalogue). And two years later, the brand launched its Conscious Collection, the start of its mission to create a more sustainable fashion future.
Today, H&M has literally thousands of locations worldwide (including international H&M Home stores) and continues evolving with time and trend.
