The history of Selfridges
Harry Gordon Selfridge arrived in London from Chicago in 1906 with a dream of opening a new store bent on making shopping fun and a form of leisure instead of a chore. Part of his winning recipe included placing merchandise on display for customers to gawk at and moving the perfume counter front and centre. Selfridges opened to positive reception with countless customers flocking to snatch up shoes, men's and women’s fashions, jewellery, and so much more.
Selfridges (which was named Provincial Stores) was acquired by the John Lewis Partnership in 1940. 11 years later, Liverpool’s Lewis’ chain bought the Oxford Street store and expanded brands by adding Moultons of Ilford and switching the name to Selfridges.
In 1965, Selfridges and Lewis’ was purchased by Sears Group, yet split Selfridges and Lewis in 1990. In 1998, Selfridges demerged from Sears while also opening at Manchester Trafford Centre.
During lockdown in August 2020, Selfridges survived by offering luxury pieces for hire to clients by partnering with HURR, an online fashion rental platform.
In 2021, Selfridges was sold to a joint venture, however it still continues to offer first-rate customer service (in stores and online) across the UK.
