History of Debenhams
Debenhams was founded in 1778 by William Clark, and the retailer’s namesake, William Debenham, became a part of the company in 1813. The store originally sold drapery, fabrics, and haberdashery goods. Debenhams Ltd was incorporated in 1905 and by 1950 the company was the largest department store retailer in the UK. The first international store was opened in Bahrain in 1997 and today Debenhams operates 178 stores around the world, primarily in the UK, Ireland and Denmark.
