Edinburgh: Tourism, shopping and much more!

Known as the capital city of Scotland, Edinburgh is also the 2nd most populous city in Scotland (and the 7th most populous one in the UK). For those interested in the correct pronunciation of the city’s name, it’s either ed-in-bruh or ed-in-buh-ruh (both are considered correct). Although the meaning of the city’s name is unknown, it’s also affectionally referred to as Auld Reekie (Scots for Old Smoky) due to the smoke-covered Old Town.

Like the rest of Scotland, Edinburgh’s climate is cool, temperate and maritime. But despite its northern latitude, the city’s weather is quite milder than other places located at similar latitudes (including Moscow).

Fortunately for those who wish to travel throughout and explore the city, Edinburgh offers a promising number of hotels, multiple Airbnb properties, etc. And in terms of sightseeing, visitors can pick and choose from a delightful number of attractions. Like Edinburgh Castle which overlooks the city from Castle Rock and where you can discover amazing treasures like the oldest crown jewels in the UK.

Another fascinating option is the National Museum of Scotland, a breath-taking indoor attraction (in case that weather acts up again). Bring the whole family, enter for free and explore the 20,000+ unique artefacts that include anything from Egyptian treasures to modern-day technology.

Edinburgh: Map for shopping

No matter the weather in Edinburgh, you’re sure to have a great time exploring the city’s various shopping outlets.

First on your list should be Waverley Market (also formerly known as Waverley Shopping Centre, Princes Mall, and Waverley Mall). Once home to various independent retailers, the centre (which is mainly underground) now houses high-street fashion chain stores and a spacious food court set to entice any shopper. Pop in and see what possible weekly promotions you might be missing at stores like Born in Scotland, Anime Republic, The Whisky Shop, and others.

Off the east side of St. Andrew Square is where you’ll find Multrees Walk. This pedestrian shopping area came to life in 2003 as part of a redevelopment project. Today, this super modern design (anchored at its south-west corner by Harvey Nichols) offers enticing brand names like Canada Goose, Max Maria, and Reiss.

Located on the east end of New Town is St James Quarter, a spacious galleria retail shopping centre and residential development. Known as one of Edinburgh’s newest shopping spaces (it only opened in June 2021), the centre and its various stores (including Aesop, Carvela, and Kiehl's) still have that fresh, new vibe that shoppers go crazy for.

If you find yourself in the city centre, keep in mind that Cameron Toll Shopping Centre is about 2.4 km away. This one-storey indoor mall features a rich collection of shops, cafes, and even a petrol station. Come see what in-store specials and possible discounts you might be missing out on at well-loved shops like H.Samuel, Peacocks and Waterstone’s.

Lastly, on those fine-weather days when you’re in the mood for some outdoor shopping, we recommend that you travel to Fort Kinnaird. Located off the A1 on the city’s south-east side, this outdoor retail park, which features more than 70 shops (including Elegance, Guy & Beard, ProCook and more), got treated to a 57,000 sq ft leisure extension in 2015.
