Ealing

Ealing: Tourism, shopping and much more!

Ealing, a district in West London, is often referred to as Ealing Broadway, which is the name of both a railway interchange and shopping centre that can be found here. Those curious about the name’s meaning should look towards history – the area derives its name from the Gillingas (the people of Gilla) which, over time, gradually changed into Yealing, Zelling, Eling and, finally Ealing.

Interestingly, Ealing is also known as the UK’s hotspot for Polish, since the most common language spoken in Ealing (after English, of course) is Polish.

In terms of climate, Ealing’s weather is not far removed from the rest of England’s – short and comfortable summers paired with long and very cold winters, and cloudy weather right throughout the year.

Those seeking to fill the time in Ealing have various options to consider, including The Musical Museum. This charity, museum and concert venue (which also houses a concert hall and a café) contains a breath-taking collection of self-playing musical instruments, plus one of the world’s biggest collections of historical musical rolls.

For some fresh air, we recommend a walk around Northala Fields, a public park located in Northolt with four artificial hills constructed from the rubble of the demolished Wembley Stadium. Various fishing lakes, a large field area, a kids’ play area, café, plus an assortment of wildlife ponds and wetlands make Northala Fields a perfect day out for the entire family.

Ealing: Map for shopping

But don’t discount Ealing’s commitment to retail therapy - in fact, one of the area’s finest shopping malls, Ealing Broadway, is located close to Ealing Broadway station. With over 85 units scattered both in- and outside the centre, Ealing Broadway, which was built in the mid-80s, underwent a spectacular refurbishment in 2013. Today, you can expect well-loved brands and shops like Clinton Cards, Greenka, and River Island to cater to your shopping needs.

Only 20 minutes away in the town centre of Hounslow we find Treaty Centre. This enclosed shopping mall, which also underwent a fabulous renovation (in 2011), enjoys an average weekly footfall of about 195,000 shoppers. But who can blame them, as the mall is chock a block with popular names like Ernest Jones, Smiggle, and Select?

Over in Blenheim Centre, you’ll find a supermarket, discount store, learning centres, a gym, plus a 400-space car park ripe and ready for those who want to shop until they drop. And as the centre is only a short walk away from the town’s main high street, as well as various hotels and parks, it’s so much easier getting to those weekly promotions and product flyers at shops like ASDA, Jungle V.I.P., B&M and more.

If you don’t mind driving a bit further to Southampton, you’ll find Westquay Shopping Centre and its 95,600 m² of retail- and leisure space awaiting you. This glamorous shopping spot offers more than 130 stores (including Boux Avenue, H Samuel, and Russell & Bromley.), making it one of the UK’s most popular centres.

Finally, we find St Ann's Shopping Centre less than 30 minutes away in Harrow town centre, Greater London. Opened in 1987, the centre makes up over 280,000 square feet of retail space, meaning there’s more than enough room for its 40+ high-street brands like Moss Bros., Debaere, Primark and others.
